Dr. Eben Alexander III has been an academic neurosurgeon for over 25 years, and has always been widely regarded for his understanding of the human brain. When a mysterious brain infection put him in a coma in November 2008, his own prospects for survival were quite dismal. Just as doctors began to consider stopping treatment, he awoke, to everyone’s surprise. Memories of his life had been completely deleted, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm. Dr. Alexander’s story offers a crucial key to the understanding of reality and human consciousness, and has had a major effect on how the world—secular and religious communities alike—view spirituality. In analyzing his experience, including the scientific possibilities and grand implications, Dr. Alexander envisions a more complete reconciliation of modern science and spirituality.
